Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a progressive and standard recoil spring?

A progressive spring has a variable rate that changes through the recoil cycle, while a standard spring has a constant rate. Many shooters find it gives smoother cycling and less felt recoil.

What pistols is this spring made for?

Full-size (5 inch) 1911 and 2011 pistols with a standard recoil spring and guide rod, from Colt, Springfield, Kimber, STI, Staccato, Bul Armory, SVI and Rock Island. Not sure? Send us your exact model before you order. Gunsmith fitting may be required.

How is it fitted?

It replaces the factory recoil spring, and the slide must come off to fit it. Only takes a few minutes to change out. Gunsmith fitting may be required.

Which way round does the progressive spring go?

Put the tighter coils on first and slide the spring down the guide rod. Don't go by the colour mark on the spring. It works either way round, but most shooters run it this way.

How long does the spring last?

If you are running a CZ Shadow 2 OR with custom low-power-factor reloads, the 10lb Boss Components Progressive Spring is a game-changer. I swapped this into my optics-ready setup to tune it specifically for my tailored hand loads, and the performance is incredible. It tracks beautifully, eliminates slide dip, and ensures 100% cycling reliability even with lower-pressure rounds. The progressive rate does a fantastic job of absorbing the recoil while keeping the dot steady in the glass. It is an absolute must-have for anyone looking to optimize their Shadow 2 competition rig!

Customer video review of CZ 75/Shadow 2 Progressive Recoil Spring

I installed the Boss Components Progressive Spring into my CZ Shadow 2 Optics Ready (OR), and it has been absolutely stellar. After extensive use, it has run smoothly without a single incident, hitch, or malfunction. The progressive tension is a perfect match for the Shadow 2's slide weight, delivering a noticeably smoother recoil impulse and keeping the red dot tracking flat for incredibly fast follow-up shots. It feels robust, well-engineered, and handles factory ammunition perfectly. If you want reliable, match-grade performance for your Shadow 2, this is a flawless upgrade.

Adding this recoil spring has greatly improved. How flat my gun shoots now It has made a significant difference. And i'm so very happy that I added this into my pistol

CZ 75/Shadow 2 Progressive Recoil Spring

I highly recommend getting your information from the experts at Boss Components. Using an incorrectly weighted spring can cause firearm malfunctions and create a serious safety risk, particularly for novices. The Boss Components spring works perfectly, and I was very impressed with their service and fast delivery.

CZ 75/Shadow 2 Progressive Recoil Spring

Bought several progressive springs from Boss Components for my Staccato XL (2011). The problem I was trying to solve was misfeeds with the factory spring (7 lb) when using low muzzle energy 9 mm ammo, specifically 147 gr, 900 fps rounds. The BC 7 lb (nominal) progressive spring solved the problem. Note that the factory spring measured 7.5 lbs at full travel while the BC was 10.5 lbs, much better at closing the slide. The progressive spring basically acts like a 7 lb spring in terms of felt recoil, but reliably closes the slide, more like a 10 lb spring. Solved my problem without noticeably increasing the felt recoil. For 2011 shooters, note that the barrel ramp is steep and builds up carbon quickly. Flat head rounds (e.g., Syntech) are especially prone to "stick" to a dirty ramp, which causes misfeeds. Other causes are riding the slide with your thumb and of course a spring that is too weak.

1911/2011 Progressive Recoil Spring | Reduced Recoil

I like the design of this spring and the feel of my S2 recoil impulse. I am currently using the 12lb progressive spring with the Boss tungsten guide rod. The slide closes a little more slowly than I am used to, but I havent had any malfunctions with factory Blazer ammo
