Brake or compensator?
The terms get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. A muzzle brake works on rearward recoil. A compensator works on muzzle rise. Competition designs generally do some of both, and which one you want depends on whether your problem is the gun pushing back into your shoulder or the sights climbing off target. Thread pitch, and the adapter that saves you buying twice
Rifle brakes are pitch-specific. 1/2x28 is the common .223 thread; 5/8x24 is the common .308 thread. Our 1/2x28 TPI standard explainer covers why that matters. The thread adapter steps 1/2x28 up to 5/8x24, so a 5/8x24 brake can run on a 1/2x28 barrel — worth knowing before you buy a second brake. The 12 gauge brake is a clamp-on, so no barrel threading is needed at all.
