IPSC Turns 50: A Half-Century of Practical Shooting Excellence
In May 1976, forty passionate shooting enthusiasts gathered in Columbia, Missouri, for the International Combat Pistol Conference. What they founded that weekend — the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) — would grow into one of the world's most dynamic and technically demanding shooting sports. Fifty years on, as we step into 2026, the global practical shooting community is celebrating a monumental milestone.

This is the story of IPSC: where it came from, how it reached Australia, and what 2026 means for every competitive shooter on the planet.
The Birth of a Sport: Columbia, Missouri, 1976
Before IPSC, competitive pistol shooting was dominated by static bullseye formats — slow-fire, deliberate, divorced from real-world shooting dynamics. A group of shooters, led by the legendary Jeff Cooper (who became IPSC's first President), wanted something different. They wanted a sport that rewarded accuracy, power, and speed in equal measure.
The founding members — among them Ken Hackathorn, Ray Chapman, Dick Thomas, and Raul Walters — codified the rules of practical shooting at that 1976 conference. The principle was simple: Diligentia, Vis, Celeritas (Accuracy, Power, Speed). The sport would be dynamic. Courses of fire would simulate real scenarios. Competitors would move, draw from holsters, engage multiple targets, and reload under pressure.
That founding vision is still the DNA of IPSC today.
From 40 Founders to 100+ Nations
IPSC's growth over five decades has been extraordinary. From those 40 founding members in Missouri, the confederation has expanded to include over 100 affiliated regions worldwide, with hundreds of thousands of active competitors. The sport now spans multiple disciplines beyond handgun — including rifle, shotgun, and action air — making it one of the most comprehensive competitive shooting organisations on earth.
Key milestones along the way:
- 1975–1976: Jeff Cooper and associates formalise the practical shooting concept at the Columbia conference
- 1980s: IPSC expands rapidly into Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, and South America
- 1994: The first official IPSC Handgun World Shoot is held, establishing the pinnacle event of the sport
- 2000s: Introduction of divisions (Production, Standard, Open, Classic) to accommodate different equipment and budgets
- 2010s: Rapid growth across Asia-Pacific, including strong development in Australia
- 2025: IPSC welcomes three new regions — Jordan, India, and Luxembourg — bringing global representation to new heights
- August 2025: IPSC launches its official 50th Anniversary logo ahead of the Jubilee Year
- January 2026: IPSC featured at SHOT Show 2026, marking the anniversary on the world's biggest firearms industry stage
- 2026: The Jubilee Year — 50 years of practical shooting excellence
IPSC Comes to Australia
Practical shooting arrived in Australia through Western Australia, initially developing as a state-level handgun sport before spreading nationally. The sport found fertile ground in a country with a deep culture of responsible firearms ownership and competitive shooting — particularly within the network of the Sporting Shooters' Association of Australia (SSAA).
Today, Australian IPSC competitors participate at every level of the sport, from local club matches through to the IPSC World Shoot. Australia's practical shooting community is vibrant, technically sophisticated, and fiercely competitive.
Australian competitors favour a wide range of pistol platforms. In the Production division — arguably the most popular entry point into the sport — the CZ Shadow 2 has become the pistol of choice for a huge proportion of Australian IPSC shooters. Its exceptional trigger, ergonomics, and 19-round capacity make it the benchmark Production gun worldwide, and Australian shooters have embraced it wholeheartedly.
The Divisions: Something for Every Shooter
One of IPSC's great strengths is its division structure, which creates a level playing field and allows competitors to enter at virtually any equipment level:
- Production: Stock pistols with minimal modification — the most accessible division. Dominated by the CZ Shadow 2 and similar DA/SA pistols
- Standard: Allows more modifications, higher capacity magazines, and better triggers. Popular with 2011-platform pistols
- Open: The pinnacle — optical sights, compensators, extended magazines, and all-out performance. 2011 platforms reign supreme
- Classic: Honouring the 1911 heritage — single-stack magazines, traditional platforms
- Revolver: For purists who appreciate the original practical shooting platform
- Production Optics (PO): The newest major division, reflecting the explosion in pistol-mounted red dot sight popularity
2026: The Jubilee Year
The IPSC 50th Anniversary isn't just a ceremonial milestone — it's a celebration of everything the sport stands for. Matches around the world will carry special anniversary significance throughout 2026. The official anniversary logo, launched in August 2025, will be featured at events from local club stages to the World Shoot.
For Australian IPSC shooters, 2026 is the perfect year to:
- Get into the sport if you've been thinking about it
- Upgrade your setup and compete at a higher level
- Celebrate fifty years of the sport with your club and teammates
