Production Division: The Purist's Challenge

Production Division is where most competitive shooters start. The rules are designed to keep costs down and put the emphasis on shooting skill rather than equipment. Pistols must appear on the IPSC Production List, and modifications are heavily restricted.

What's Legal in Production

What's NOT Legal in Production

  • External magwells
  • Red dot optics (use Production Optics instead)
  • Compensators or barrel porting
  • Thumb rests that act as a shelf (gas pedal style rests are now permitted since the 2024 rule book update)
  • Magazine extensions beyond +2mm

Best Production Division Platforms

The CZ Shadow 2 dominates Production Division globally. Its low bore axis, excellent factory trigger, and 1355g weight (just under the 1400g limit with room for upgrades) make it the benchmark. The Tanfoglio Stock 2/3 is a strong alternative, particularly popular in European IPSC regions.

Production Optics Division

Identical to Production rules with one major exception: you may mount a single red dot sight on the slide. This is the fastest-growing IPSC division. All Production-legal modifications apply, plus:

Standard Division: The Performance Sweet Spot

Standard Division opens up the modification rules significantly while keeping compensators and optics off the table. This is where equipment starts making a real difference, and where Boss Components products deliver the most competitive advantage.

What's Legal in Standard

Recommended Standard Division CZ Shadow 2 Build

For the complete Standard Division CZ Shadow 2 competition setup, our CZ Shadow 2 Grips & Brass Magwell Combo ($239.99) bundles the two highest-impact upgrades at a discount. Add matching base pads and a tungsten guide rod for a complete transformation.

Open Division: No Holds Barred

Open Division is the Formula 1 of IPSC. Compensators, optics, magwells, extended everything — if it makes the gun faster, it's probably legal. This is where 2011 platforms shine.

Key Open Division Equipment

Classic Division: Single-Stack Precision

Classic Division uses 1911 single-stack pistols. Magazine capacity is limited (8 rounds minor power factor, 10 rounds major), making every shot count. Equipment modifications are relatively open within the single-stack format.

USPSA Division Cross-Reference

If you compete in USPSA as well as IPSC, here's how the divisions map:

IPSC Division Closest USPSA Division Key Differences
Production USPSA Production USPSA allows 141.25mm OAL magazines; IPSC limits to 15 rounds loaded
Production Optics USPSA Carry Optics Similar concept, minor rule differences
Standard USPSA Limited Very similar; USPSA Limited allows slightly different magazine dimensions
Open USPSA Open Nearly identical rules
Classic USPSA Single Stack Similar concept for 1911 platforms

Equipment Checklist: What to Bring to Your First Match

Regardless of division, every IPSC competitor needs:

  • Approved holster (must cover trigger guard, mounted between hip bones)
  • Minimum 3 magazine pouches (mounted on belt, behind hip bones)
  • Competition belt (our IPSC/USPSA Competition Belt ($79.99) fits all major holster and pouch systems)
  • Eye protection (mandatory)
  • Ear protection (mandatory)
  • Chamber safety flags ($17.99) — required at most ranges and between stages
  • Minimum 5 loaded magazines for a comfortable match (3 absolute minimum)

Frequently Asked Questions

What division should a beginner start in?

Production Division. The restricted modification rules keep costs down, and the emphasis on shooting fundamentals builds skills that transfer to every other division. Start with a CZ Shadow 2 or Tanfoglio Stock 2 and invest in quality grips and a recoil spring before spending on anything else.

Are magwells legal in IPSC Production Division?

No. External magwells are not permitted in IPSC Production Division. If you want to use a magwell, you need to compete in Standard Division or above. Our CZ Shadow 2 Brass Magwell and Aluminium Magwell are both designed to comply with Standard Division's 35mm width limit.

What's the maximum magazine length in IPSC Standard Division?

170mm overall length when loaded. This applies to the total length of the magazine including the base pad and the top round. Our Standard Division base pads for CZ Shadow 2 and 2011 platforms are designed to maximise capacity within this limit.

Can I use a red dot sight in IPSC Standard Division?

No. Standard Division does not permit optics. If you want to use a red dot, you need Production Optics (for production-list pistols) or Open Division (for race guns). Boss Components offers red dot mounts for both CZ Shadow 2 and 1911/2011 platforms.

What's the difference between IPSC Standard and USPSA Limited?

They're very similar divisions designed for modified pistols without optics or compensators. The main differences are in magazine dimension rules and power factor requirements. Most equipment that's legal in one is legal in the other, including all Boss Components magwells, base pads, and accessories.

Do I need a magwell for competition shooting?

In divisions where magwells are legal (Standard, Open, Classic), a magwell is one of the highest-impact upgrades available. A quality magwell can reduce reload times by 0.3-0.5 seconds per reload — that's 3-5 seconds saved across a typical match. In Production Division where magwells aren't allowed, focus on grips, springs, and magazine release upgrades instead.

What are thumb rests and are they legal in IPSC?

Thumb rests provide a consistent hand position that improves recoil control and transition speed. They're legal in Standard and Open Division. In Production Division, only gas-pedal style rests (that don't act as a shelf) are permitted since the 2024 rule update. Our 1911/2011 Adjustable Thumb Rest is designed for Standard and Open competition.

How much weight does a brass magwell add to my pistol?

Our CZ Shadow 2 Brass Magwell adds approximately 150 grams, positioned low on the grip. This weight serves a dual purpose: it creates a wider funnel for faster reloads AND lowers the centre of gravity for reduced muzzle flip. The aluminium alternative adds roughly 40-50 grams for shooters who prefer a lighter setup.
